jgnat - you have a PM
i am more than midway through the book, "expecting armageddon, essential readings in failed prophecy" edited by jon r. stone.
i'd started this over a year ago and just recently picked it up again.
at this point in the book i feel i can give a fairly decent appraisal for the ex-witness community.. first of all, this is a collection of scholarly articles, which mean that they don't all agree with each other.

"the conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society.
each part is around 160 mb.
thanks for posting. Very interesting.
Wonder what Part 5 would be if it continued?

Hello Jgnat!!
I got a google alert for this thread earlier today.
thanks for the review.
Yet he stays with the society. His reasons are illogical but powerful none-the-less.
very true

*** text for june-30-10 ***.
wednesday, june 30. he himself well knows the formation of us, remembering that we are dust.-ps.
103:14.. jehovah does not expect us to be perfect in the absolute sense.
Jehovah doesn't expect us to be perfect but Jesus said we must be.
Jesus = anointed = governing body
i've heard certain people here refer to jehovah's witnesses as a mind-control cult, high-control cult; theories perpetrated for how long i don't know, but at least since the days of ray franz.
i had spent nearly forty years as a full time representative, serving at every level of the organizational structure.
the last fifteen years i had spent at the international headquarters, and the final nine of those as a member of the worldwide governing body of jehovah's witnesses.
Not all cults are religious or god based - but they all have the same characteristics and identifying marks.
Depending on how extreme the character of the group will determine how dangerous.
Emotional blackmail is extreme and dangerous, often times deadly.
Shunning or the threat of, by the group and by extension family, friends, or GOD is emotional blackmail.
wp
this is the first study article from the april 15, 2010 watchtower, titled "young people - strengthen your desire to serve jehovah.
" i hit paragraph four and i just had to pause to comment.
i am pretty darn sure this is a softening of the jehovah's witness stance regarding the appropriate age for baptism.
AND that DFing down the road isn't JUST to blackmail to keep you in -
it's to keep others AWAY from you - making it difficult to find out why you don't want to be in a _ _ _ _.
QUESTION: If you're a "young one" Is there a way to move to different cong. and not tell anyone you were baptized?
does anyone remember seeing the witness movie called "heritage" ?
it was made in the early 60's and they used to show it once a year at the kh when i was a kid.
(with guilty minds, we were secretly glad to see the projector set up in the middle section of the hall because it meant we didn't have to sit through another long boring talk.. even as a little kid i could see the one sided propaganda basicaly showing how empty "worldly" peoples lives were compared to ours and if you were a witness your family life would be idyllic like on "leave it to beaver".
wow, this has a groovy retro look. I like it.
The message is very one sided, but one could also turn the whole thing around & see that one side as someone trapped inside - on the other side!
Someone who is forced to conform, lose his individuality and if you show any independant thinking you're cast out. Alone. Even your parents disown you.
"I'd almost be glad if he beat me, at least he'd be showing me some attention" - good lord there's a subtle subliminal seed.
Can you imagine being a kid and wanting to discuss plans for university, or the pursuit of a talent?
"No wonder daddy left you, you old drunk" - thats the way to treat the depressed, distressed, family member
"Can you imagine living with cognative dissonance - on edge all the time, or depressed looking for escape
AND how many times have they used the word "Generation" ?? - definitely the "old light" definition.

day number 2 is done.. there was an audio drama, sure, it adds some excitement, hey, its different.. final talk "stay close to jehovah, as jeremiah did" ended with the release of the book ... god's word for us through jeremiah ... not a verse by verse consideration of prophecy, rather, what we can learn from jeremiah's life as a prophet, considers information from jeremiah and lamentations.
(of course informed readers of this site knew of this release already.).
noticibly missing ... jesus christ ... to me it was painfully obvious.. one talk i think was numbing our mind to accept the generation bomb tomorrow.. i couldn't help but realize that throughout the convention so far, the vast majority of scriptural references are from old testament (yes, it was hard not to say hebrew scriptures, so i just did).. i didn't realize it so much in the past, but it seems like jehovah's witnesses are trying to accomplish what the nation of israel couldn't, follow laws.
wannabe - good point:
I didn't realize it so much in the past, but it seems like Jehovah's Witnesses are trying to accomplish what the nation of Israel couldn't, follow laws. It seems so obvious now. Didn't Jesus free us from that?

just setting the record straight.
there is another thread that notes a claim on wiki that said that ray has died.. he had a stroke yesterday, and is in the hospital.
he is still alive.
Mr. Franz surely is one of a kind. A brave and humble human being.
His books were the main source of the truth about the Truthâ„¢ that helped me through a very dark time in my life.
His work will live on forever.
my kindest heartfelt regards

one of the great lessons this board gave me is the cruelty of shunning by the jehovah's witnesses.
it is inhuman.
the toll it takes on a person cannot be underestimated.
(Jnat) - so nice to hear from you. Hope you are well. I am very well thank you. We will have to catch up soon.
I love Jean Vanier's discussions. There was a series on TV a few years ago where he took a chapter of the bible and talked about it. He certainly added a persective that is so simple and sensible.
His book "being human" certainly reminds one of our responsiblities to fellow human beings. This link has a few interviews with him.
